Abaadi Center Programs
The Abaadi Learning and Research Center is a registered, youth-led non-governmental organization committed to empowering young people and women to overcome social and political marginalization and actively engage in the processes shaping their society. Our mission is to seize the opportunities presented by social and environmental changes in Somalia, utilizing the power of social media to enrich oral traditions.
We believe that public health and learning are closely related and directly impact the outcome of each respectively. We are currently looking for partners to integrate WASH programing at our center. Please contact us if you would like to pitch in!
Media and cyber literacy
This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of media and cyber literacy in the modern digital age. Students learn about the different forms of media, including traditional and digital media, and how they are produced and consumed. They are also exploring the impact of media on society, including issues related to media bias, fake news, and propaganda. In addition, students learn about cyber security, privacy, and ethics, including safe online behavior, protecting personal information, and understanding the consequences of online actions. Through interactive lessons and practical exercises, students will develop critical thinking and analysis skills, enabling them to become responsible and informed media consumers and digital citizens.
Basic computer skills & computer literacy
Abaadi is delivering a series of courses for young Somalis in Garowe designed to provide youth with a solid foundation in basic computer skills and computer literacy. Students are learning fundamentals of computer hardware and software starting from scratch such as how to use a mouse and keyboard, navigate the operating system, and use common applications such as word processors, spreadsheets, and web browsers. They are also introduced to internet safety and security, including safe online behavior and protecting personal information. Through hands-on activities and practical exercises, students gain confidence and proficiency in using computers, setting them up for success in a rapidly changing digital world.
Storytelling Through Multimedia Arts
At its heart, the Abaadi Center harnesses the power of storytelling, rooted in Somalia’s rich oral traditions, to channel youth energy toward building a peaceful and democratic society. Through multimedia arts, we empower young people to challenge conflict-driven narratives, address racism, sexism, and gender-based violence, and advocate for positive change.
Our civic-minded youth actively engage in storytelling, debates, and even local elections, using their voices to promote equity and inclusion. The center equips them with the skills to document and amplify issues that matter to their communities in compelling, responsible ways.
By preparing African youth to take on diverse civic and entrepreneurial roles, the Abaadi Center remains committed to fostering a generation capable of shaping a brighter and more inclusive future for Somalia.
Somali women
In Somalia, women face significant barriers to equal rights and opportunities, with social benefits often favoring men. Somali women have limited access to education, work, and leadership roles, despite playing a vital role in the country’s culture and society. As Somalia works to recover from years of conflict, women’s active participation in the nation’s development is crucial. Inclusive development that empowers women will greatly benefit the country’s progress. Women are the foundation of families, raising children and shaping the future.
No one’s rights, responsibilities, or opportunities should be determined by their gender. Yet, worldwide, women and gender-diverse individuals continue to face social, economic, and political inequalities. Our workshops on creating a gender-inclusive society aim to break down barriers and open doors for women to take on higher roles and contribute fully to society’s growth.
